Faces of Conflict

For the image post, I decide to look up images of people during the civil war in Guatemala in an attempt to show the different sides to the conflict. The emotions range from anger, fear, sadness, and hate. I think theses images show the distress of Guatemalan civilians in a time when the government (military) had complete control. People did not have the means to have themselves or their opinions represented. It is hard to imagine living a country where you are not free to voice your political opinions. Unfortunately, that is how it was during Guatemala's civil war.

While I have not been directed affected by the conflict in Guatemala, my father has. He was born there in 1960 and endured the civil war with his family throughout his life time. He didn't discuss the civil war much in detail because it was difficult to relive some of those moments. Seeing this, I hope to understand and promote awareness for historical events like this so that we may all learn from history. We may not think terrible social and political injustices typically occur because we lived in the United states. However there are many people in the world suffering injustices at the hands of those in power or the majority.
